Senior Content Data Model Architect

About Us

We are the world’s largest university press. We have both a worldwide reach and a personal understanding of local needs, partnering on the ground to adapt publications and resources to meet the individual needs of communities, societies, and countries. We partner with researchers, educators, and technology partners to stay ahead of the changing ways people around the world are accessing and sharing knowledge. With a presence in more than 50 countries and millions of customers around the world, an idea launched at OUP can have global impact.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced data modelling professional to join our vibrant and supportive technology development team as Senior Content Data Model Architect. The role will have governance accountability for all OUP Content Data models (mainly in XML), prioritising, reviewing and managing their strategic development, and signing-off the deliverables of Content Data Model Architecture to support business requirements for display, functionality, and accessibility.  You will be representing OUP’s Content Data models and the data model team internally and externally at a high level, owning the Data Model roadmap, providing a senior expert escalation point and consultancy and pro-actively raising requirements for related solutions and processes, and ensuring their alignment with domain models and external standards.

Key responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Lead specialist, expert contributions to the Content Model Strategy, defining core digital content principles and applying these in governance of content schemas/models.
  • Own the definition of content data model activities on the roadmap and ensure these are prioritised effectively.
  • Responsible for developing, delivering, reviewing and approving the Content Data Model deliverables, and ensuring appropriate content schemas/models and structures are in place for all content, prioritizing harmonization across content sets and divisions, simplification, format-neutrality, potential for automated generation, and alignment with industry standards and the content domain model.
  • Design, review, and approve changes to content data model capture instructions, working with appropriate implementation and Content Engineering stakeholders to ensure models and solutions are communicated and tested as required.
  • Design and regularly review the mapping of Content Data models to the Content Domain model, as well as to functional and display outputs in all formats.
  • Pro-actively raise and assess requirements for transformations, tools, and process solutions by which content schemas/models can be applied and validated, enabling their controlled application.
  • Overseeing the deliverables of Content Data Model Architecture, providing leadership guidance and prioritisation, and reviewing team deliverables across divisions
  • Act as a Content Data model consultant to support the Implementation team's deliverables (e.g. for solution development, validation, scripting, and data transforms), including participating in testing solutions and outputs where appropriate.
  • Independently represent the team, the Content Data model(s), and digital content principles internally and externally – to build knowledge and awareness within the business and facilitate conversations and consultancy with clients, customers, and readers.
  • Monitor and translate industry standards, developments, and other impactful requirements into appropriate content data structures and/or values.
  • Engage in and participate with specific industry initiatives to reflect the requirements and considerations relevant to OUP.
  • Assess proofs-of-concept against strategic principles and priorities

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

Essential:

  • Extensive experience of XML formats and related technologies (such as XSLT, XPath, Unicode, XSpec, Schematron, RDF, DITA)
  • Able to accurately evaluate functional and presentational content data requirements, and proactively ensure that solutions align with strategic principles
  • Demonstrable knowledge of content structures and ability to write and review/approve clear text capture instructions
  • Ability to lead and influence stakeholders while working independently on strategic and tactical projects.

Desirable:

  • Experience of programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, PHP), data validations, and transforms
  • Knowledge of content management systems and methodologies.
  • Experience leading the work of a team - assessing, reviewing, managing, and prioritising their deliverables and showing enthusiasm for leading change
  • Experience working with digital content across academic and/or educational publishing
  • Demonstrable knowledge of current general trends and technologies in publishing content data model development, standards, and solutions
  • Parsing or matching content in large quantities of data (for example through exploiting databases or language engineering)
