3PL Operations Manager

Group operations are at the central of OUP providing support to all divisions.

About the role

This new role will be the process lead for OUP’s transition to using Third Party Logistics Providers (3PLPs) from the initial concept stage through to implementation, working with agreed project management structures, and post implementation lead the overview of operational performance for facilities run by 3PLPs.

The jobholder will also be the business owner of global freight agreements and the South China hub warehouse, driving SLAs and KPIs and be the point of escalation to resolve operational issues. This role is the 3PL technical expert and pivotal contact point for key OUP internal stakeholders and providers.

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the development of the strategy for outsourced operations
  • Providing knowledge and intelligence of 3PL providers and market trends
  • Ensuring that all transitions are managed effectively with sustainable ongoing management, within the agreed project management framework and governance structure
  • Assisting in the preparation of RFPs and the sourcing cycle to ensure that contracts are established which meet the Press requirements and minimise risk 
  • Undertaking post implementation reviews to drive collaboration and enhanced performance
  • Establish and maintain a replicable performance management process for all 3PL suppliers providing services to the Press, ensuring visibility of performance to enable benchmarking of costs and performance to drive further improvements and demonstrate value for money
  • Responsible for documenting and maintaining best practice guides for 3PL outsourcing programmes.

Frequent overseas travel will be an essential part of this role, occasionally this will be at short notice.

About you

The successful candidate will have the following.


  • Highly developed interpersonal and stakeholder management skills with the ability to develop and manager relationships with providers
  • Proven experience in relocating warehouses and  transitioning from own account to third party providers
  • Experience of working effectively within formal change, project and programme management structures, and managing simultaneous, interdependent projects
  • Experience of managing  logistics suppliers with ability to develop strategic partnerships which meet the Press’s Supply Chain requirements
  • In depth knowledge of warehouse/freight operational developments, including systems, processes and technology
  • Excellent analytical skills and proven ability to draw assumptions from operational and financial data which drive performance improvements


  • Degree qualified or equivalent
  • CILT  accredited
  • Prince 2/MSP qualified
  • Experience of relocating warehouses across multiple geographies.
