Associate Technology Director


Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

The Academic Division is responsible for OUP’s scholarly publishing around the world, including its academic books and journals, HE course materials, general interest and academic dictionaries, and online products such as Grove Music and the OED. The technology function, headed by the Academic Technology Director, underpins the delivery of digital products and publishing, manages the Academic project portfolio, and works closely with the Group Technology function to ensure that OUP meets the demanding requirements of 21st century digitally-enabled publishing. 



We are recruiting for an Associate Technology Director to work with the Technology Director  to manage the overall Academic Division’s technology function, with a heavy emphasis on leading the Academic relationship with the Group Technology operational functions. In addition, the role will serve as the key relationship manager for the Academic Finance team to ensure the overall tech and delivery function has proper financial guidance and oversight. The role works closely with the Delivery Director, Business Partnering Lead, and Portfolio Manager to guide the overall portfolio process, from idea and inception to project delivery, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the technology function and the Academic Division as a whole.

The principal accountabilities for the Associate Technology Director role are as follows:

  • Serve as primary liaison to GCI, Group Technology Operations, and the overall IT advocate and manager of escalations for Academic. Represent Academic on Group technology governance in relation to managing effective IT policies and procedures for implementation across the Press.
  • Along with the Delivery Director, serve as proxy for Ac Tech Director as needed with Group Technology planning and management.
  • With the Academic finance manager, oversee the technology budgets of the Group Functions to ensure effective usage and value for money with clear understanding of the drivers for this.
  • Participate in 5 year planning process and lead budgeting work with the Academic financial manager.
  • Help manage the development of the technology strategy for Academic, to ensure alignment with the business strategies of the functions and the OUP Group, and to maximise benefits from the strategy through appropriate benefits planning and realisation.
  • Work closely with the Delivery Director, Business Partnering Lead, and Portfolio Manager to guide the overall portfolio process, from idea inception to project delivery, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the technology function as well as the Academic Division.
  • Serve on the Portfolio Delivery management team to help steer the function and manage the overall operation of the greater function.



Required experience, skills and personal qualities:

  •  Excellent senior business executive engagement skills
  • A robust, proactive and pragmatic delivery ethos with excellent stakeholder management, collaboration and communications skills;
  • Strong analytical capability coupled with excellent business awareness;
  • Experience of large-scale and small-scale platforms and integration, and complex data flows;
  • Experience with a variety of delivery frameworks and methodologies, particularly Agile
  • A delivery-oriented background with experience of full software development lifecycle and large transformation programmes;
  • A commercial and practical mind-set, and ability to broker agreements and compromises between conflicting priorities;
  • First rate communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex problems and influence senior non-technical and technical staff, and suppliers;
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a global organisation and across multiple geographies
  • Experience in helping run a technology delivery function
  • Proven analytical, problem solving, financial management, strategic thinking, influencing and presentation skills


  • Prior experience of content-driven, publishing or education sector business;
  • Experience of architecture and solutions design in an agile architecture environment – covering both intentional and emergent aspects;
  • Experience of driving innovation, strategy development and execution in a complex geographic / functional matrix organisation;
  • Experience of specific technology domains beyond data including ERP (SAP), CRM, web and digital platforms, infrastructure (including cloud), information security and service design;
  • A strong perspective on technology trends and suppliers/providers;
