Commissioning Assistant

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University's objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

The Academic Division publishes books, journals, and digital resources for the research, professional, and higher education markets.

This role is within the Higher Education department’s Natural and Social Sciences team and will be working predominantly on the Business & Management list. We commission and develop high quality content to support teaching and learning across these disciplines.

About the Role

The role is a FTC /Secondment for 6 months

 This role offers an exciting entry level position in our editorial team for an enthusiastic and motivated individual.

The Commissioning Assistant supports a Commissioning Editor in all aspects of their role, helping them manage and develop the Higher Education product pipeline in line with strategic goals. The postholder carries out defined market research to inform commissioning plans and to help us better understand market size, market trends, and our competitors. They also solicit reviews of product proposals and draft content from our users to ensure our published resources meet market needs, and manage components of projects during the writing process. They are also responsible for list administration – maintaining systems with accurate information, preparing proposal documentation and marketing materials, and managing the contractual process.

About You

You will be able to demonstrate a keen interest in publishing and an enthusiasm to develop your understanding of the higher education market.

You will have the following attributes:

  • communicate accurately and confidently with people at all levels, in person/via telephone and in writing
  • organise and prioritise a varied workload, meeting deadlines set
  • approach tasks in an efficient way, with excellent attention to detail
  • be highly proactive in all areas of your work, and use initiative to solve problems
  • demonstrate strong project management skills
  • show a curiosity for higher education publishing, and an awareness of commercial issues
  • be proficient in Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • demonstrate excellent team-working skills
  • have an inquisitive mind and show a desire to learn
  • work in a flexible way, and be a proactive nature


We care about work/life balance here at OUP; with this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday (plus bank holidays and Christmas closure), and a 35-hour working week, along with the flexibility to start and finish late or early as required. This role comes with a discretionary bonus and our pension contribution is up to 11%.

Wellbeing is really important to us so we also have a wide range of facilities including: a canteen that serves a variety of healthy and delicious meals, a subsidized onsite gym and subsidized coffee shops as well as an active sports and social programme.

We’re all currently working from home at the moment due to COVID.  We are currently thinking through how we use our offices in the future and are open to discussing flexibility within this such as a blend of office and home working.
