Commissioning Editor

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

Formed in 2005 as a spin-out from Imperial College London, Epigeum creates and sells high quality online training courses for the higher education sector.  Epigeum has been part of Oxford University Press since 2015, and has ambitious plans for growth in an HE sector undergoing a rapid transition to online learning, teaching, and research.

About the Role

The Commissioning Editor is responsible for developing Epigeum’s portfolio of online courses. In particular, this involves commissioning new products as well as updates to our flagship courses and identifying opportunities for new training programmes and services. This role will also undertake market research into trends and drivers in Higher Education and bring onboard key experts in the respective subject areas. The Commissioning Editor is responsible for creating the product vision, and for ensuring the delivery of that vision throughout the content development phases so that we create high-quality, engaging courses that meet user and market needs.


  • The role will have an immediate focus on developing product plans for a new development group opportunity in FY20-21
  • The role will research and develop products across the entire portfolio, but with a particular focus on the Teaching and Development, and Research strands

About You

To be successful in this role you must be someone who

  • Has proven experience of list and portfolio management and experience of signing products and services that respond to the needs of the market, ideally  gained in Higher Education or educational publishing
  • Can demonstrate commercial awareness and an ability to identify and capitalise on opportunities
  • Has proven experience of developing content and delivering products that achieve their strategic aim and meet the needs of the market
  • Has proven experience of driving and delivering products to schedule and budget
  • Has demonstrable experience of signing key subject experts and demonstrate strong author management skills
  • Has a demonstrable ability to shape and develop learning content
  • Is persuasive, and can negotiate effectively with people at all levels
  • Has experience of managing and developing team members, and be able to foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Will be an adept project manager, with excellent organisation, prioritisation and decision-making skills
  • Has a demonstrable ability to shape content and pedagogy for the education sector
  • Understands the principles of eLearning and pedagogical approaches
  • Has a proactive and flexible approach
