Design Manager - Fixed Term Contract

About the role

The Design Manager will manage all aspects of the design process for allocated projects in the Secondary and Adult departments, including the management of external suppliers in order to deliver to agreed budgets, schedules and market requirements. They will work collaboratively across all functional areas to deliver a programme of customer-focused integrated solutions that promote the teaching of English.

The Design Manager will be in charge of...

  1. Creative Management: Providing creative design concepts and branding solutions for allocated projects, ensuring appropriate quality of print and digital products, in order to reinforce OUP’s position as market leader.
  2. Production Design: Overseeing the production of and/or produce prototypes, templates, layouts, covers and screen designs for all components from handover of manuscript to final files ready for print or digital delivery.
  3. Project Management: In collaboration with other cross-functional team members, ensure that project schedules are set and best-practice maintained. Identify, manage and communicate any risks to project delivery.
  4. Compliance and Legal: Ensuring OUP’s legal obligations are met with regard to data security and media rights management for all products.
  5. Reuse of Assets: Collaborating with cross-functional colleagues to ensure that materials are planned and created according to best practice and in ways that facilitate the reuse of assets to ensure maximum opportunity for adaptation and conversion.
  6. Research: Working with Marketing, Technology, Sales and other departments as needed to conduct product, customer and market research at various stages of image asset creation to ensure a customer-focused user experience and interface for integrated solutions, both print and digital, which differentiates OUP ELT from competitors.

Please note, this is a fixed term contract of 26 weeks with the possibility of extension.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Degree in Design or equivalent
  • Significant professional design experience in publishing
  • Knowledge of pre-press and production techniques
  • Advanced knowledge of Macintosh systems and advanced-level knowledge of core design software
  • Good knowledge of automation techniques in InDesign, eg Grep and book functions
  • Experience of negotiating fees and managing budgets
  • Experience of ELT Design is desirable but not essential

Applicants must have a keen eye for detail, work accurately to deadlines and have excellent organisational skills. You will be a motivated and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with a broad range of people on a wide range of tasks and projects.
