Enterprise Architect

About us

Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objectives of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

OUP publishes in a variety of formats and is undergoing both significant digital transformation and global expansion leveraging a wide range of flagship digital assets and services. OUP is also focussed on transforming technology and operations to support core mission objectives, with significant investments in data, reusable platform services and rationalisation of existing infrastructure and applications.

Technology is a central function headed up by the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), providing capability and services globally across OUP.

About the role

We are recruiting for an experienced Enterprise Architect to join the Enterprise Architecture (EA) team within Global Technology to support the required transformation and investment programmes – helping to align the technology portfolio and decision making tightly with business strategy and to accelerate the achievement of mission objectives, the delivery of new capability and the elimination of existing technical debt.

This role reports into the Chief Enterprise Architect and will involve providing EA support, expertise and assurance to multiple technology programmes spanning the various business divisions and regional geographies of OUP as well as contributing to the formulation of the overall enterprise architecture and technology strategy of the Press and operation of associated governance and assurance processes.

The EA function comprises a team that collectively cover a range of domain expertise including strategy, data, infrastructure and front and back office applications across a wide range of technology domains – selectively drawing on a number of EA frameworks and approaches.

As a point of note OUP has recently adopted the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and the EA team is also required to support the associated architecture runway and other planning and delivery cadences and processes within SAFe.

The principal accountabilities for the senior EA role are as follows:

  • govern solutions and integrations, including defining enhancements to current systems and designing new systems, to support business requirements and technology roadmaps;
  • provide and communicate reference models and architectures for technology across OUP;
  • be a solutions and architecture authority, troubleshooting both conceptual and technical design issues on projects and across investment portfolios;
  • own and evolve the overall enterprise architecture and technology solution standards;
  • advise and provide consultancy to peers, technical staff, and managers;
  • provide assurance to validate that proposed solutions are fit for purpose, do not unnecessarily duplicate functionality and that solutions built separately will integrate and work together effectively when required;
  • guide and review third party supplier solutions providing support to the selection and assurance of supplier capability;
  • contribute to the development and dissemination of published roadmaps for key business applications and technology domains;
  • work closely with project Solution Architects for governance and project design, and with Technical Consultants and other domain or platform expert roles in setting and imposing direction to deliver against the overall goals and tenets of the OUP Technology Strategy set by the CTO.

About you

  • in-depth experience in enterprise architecture with a proven background in technical, business and/or solution architecture;
  • a robust, proactive and pragmatic delivery ethos with excellent stakeholder management, collaboration and communications skills;
  • strong analytical capability coupled with excellent business awareness;

  • a delivery-oriented background with experience of full software development lifecycle and large transformation programmes;
  • a commercial and practical mind-set, and ability to broker agreements and compromises between conflicting priorities;
  • first rate communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex problems and influence senior non-technical and technical staff, and suppliers;
  • familiarity with standard architectural approaches, techniques, tools and enterprise architecture frameworks.

  • prior experience of content-driven, publishing or education sector business;
