Head of Lexical Content Strategy

The Dictionaries Division is the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), one of the largest and longest-running scholarly projects in the world, and leads innovation in digital lexical publishing and licensing through working with the world’s largest technology and information providers. The division is also home to new, mission-led initiatives such as the Oxford Global Languages (OGL) programme, which is bringing online 100 digitally under-represented languages, and making them available to millions of people all over the world.

We are looking for someone with deep knowledge of all aspects of lexical content creation and development to help develop the lexical content strategy for Oxford Dictionaries, including the OED, and to outline plans and projects to ensure that content is developed in line with our goals and is flexible, reusable, interoperable, and user-focused.

This is a key new role in the Oxford Dictionaries team; working closely with the Content Strategy Director, the opportunity is there for you to make a real difference to how our content meets the needs of all our customers, from academic institutions and major technology companies to individual researchers and consumers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Articulating long-term lexical content strategy and its implications for projects and priorities
  • Proposing and outlining strategic plans and projects to ensure that all Oxford Dictionaries content is created and developed to meet requirements across all languages and types of content
  • Working closely with Product Managers to understand market needs and specific requirements from customers and interpret them into editorial projects for implementation
  • Overseeing editorial input to data models to ensure the potential of Oxford Dictionaries content is maximized
  • Identifying and contributing to the development of new uses for language content, including development of corpora in English and multiple languages, ensuring that editorial and business use cases are fulfilled
  • Championing strategic priorities in order to motivate teams of editors and lexicographers to deliver the priorities required; working closely with editorial teams to ensure alignment and understanding especially as strategy develops in line with changing market contexts
  • Serving as a key editorial liaison between technology, content, and business stakeholders, and facilitating knowledge transfer to dictionaries programmes across OUP to support the development of common standards

About you

These are the key skills we are looking for:

  • A deep knowledge of lexical content from traditional dictionary content to a wide variety of other lexical content (e.g. morphology, domain data)
  • A collaborative, flexible, cross-functional approach and the ability to influence and present a clear perspective to others outside your specialist area
  • Understanding of how technology can contribute to and advance lexical content
  • Self-starter, comfortable with working in a flexible, changing environment
  • Proven leadership and motivational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions based on market information
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbalThis is a specialist role in one of the most forward-thinking and innovative dictionaries businesses in the world.
