Portfolio Manager

ABOUT US

Oxford University Press (OUP) is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.

The Academic Division is responsible for OUP’s scholarly publishing around the world, including its academic books and journals, HE course materials, general interest and academic dictionaries, and online products such as Grove Music and the OED. The technology function, headed by the Academic Technology Director, underpins the delivery of digital products and publishing, manages the Academic project portfolio, and works closely with the Group Technology function to ensure that OUP meets the demanding requirements of 21st century digitally-enabled publishing.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are recruiting for a Portfolio Manager to oversee the operational management of the Academic Division's Portfolio Office, including the investment management and reporting of the portfolio register. The role works closely with the Delivery Director, Business Partnering Lead, and Associate Technology Director to guide the overall portfolio process, from inception to project delivery, and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the technology function and the Academic Division.

The principal accountabilities for the Portfolio Manager role are as follows:

  • Oversee the operational management of the Portfolio Office, including the investment management and reporting of the portfolio register
  • Run Academic Portfolio Assessment meetings and prepare quarterly board updates on the register
  • Serve as the key relationship manager with the Global Technology Portfolio Management Office to align activity, investment case methodology, reporting, and tracking
  • With the Technology Director, ensure the Academic Senior Leadership Team fully participates in key portfolio decisions and has appropriate visibility of the register
  • Participate in the 5-year planning process and lead budgeting work with the Academic financial manager
  • Help manage the development of the technology strategy for Academic so that it aligns with the functional business strategies and maximizes business benefits
  • Serve on the Portfolio Delivery management team to help guide the overall technology and delivery function within Academic

 

ABOUT YOU

Required experience, skills and personal qualities:

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, financial management, strategic thinking, communication, influencing, and presentation skills
  • Experience managing a complex delivery portfolio containing a mix of tech and non-tech projects
  • A robust, proactive and pragmatic delivery ethos with excellent stakeholder management, collaboration and communications skills;
  • First rate communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex problems and influence senior non-technical and technical staff, and suppliers
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a global matrixed organisation and across multiple geographies
  • Experience with a variety of delivery frameworks and methodologies, particularly Agile
  • A commercial and practical mind-set, and ability to broker agreements and compromises between conflicting priorities
  • Prior experience of content-driven, publishing or education sector business preferred
