Privacy Counsel (Part Time)

About the Role

Within this newly created role you’ll have the opportunity to act as the subject matter expert on data privacy and cyber security, business partnering with stakeholders across the globe. You’ll be part of a collaborative and supportive team who are committed to providing a high quality and professional legal service to OUP.  The role will report into the General Counsel for Technology, Operations and Data Privacy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing proactive first line data privacy and cyber security global legal support to ensure divisional and functional business objectives are met in a privacy compliant manner. This will involve a particular focus on divisional digital product and marketing activities and global HR policies and practices.
  • Advising on global privacy laws and regulations, including GDPR and overseas privacy frameworks, including in the US and China (with the support of external counsel if required)
  • Advising on data privacy-related contract provisions and the maintenance of suitable template clauses, including in relation to data transfers
  • Working with the Chief ISDP Officer, ensuring that privacy risks are appropriately recorded
  • Advising the ISDP team in relation to data breach and regulatory notification activity
  • Advising on Freedom of Information requests
  • Supporting the Chief ISDP Officer in relation to the maintenance of OUP ISDP policies and processes

This is a 21 hour per week position. We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum average of 1 day in the office for employees working 3 days per week, or 2 days for those working 4+ days per week.

About You

This is a great opportunity for a pragmatic, commercially savvy individual who has the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively at all levels, and who can build strong relationships within a globally matrixed organization. You will also have:


  • Current qualification as a UK solicitor
  • Significant and relevant post qualification experience
  • Experience and know how in key areas (e.g. GDPR, PECR, cyber security and data privacy)
  • Experience identifying and mitigating legal risks


  • In-house experience at a publishing / media company
  • Knowledge and/or experience of global GDPR.
