Publisher - Open Access Journals

We have been a leading figure in publishing for more than 500 years. We have always been a forward-looking organization, maximizing the technology for the day, but the digital revolution is bringing enormous change, fast. That same spirit of adventure and entrepreneurialism is critical to our future success. In a fast changing publishing landscape, OUP welcomes the inquisitive, the inventive, and the ambitious; people who challenge the conventional, and pioneer the possible.

About the role

We have a unique opportunity to help contribute to the rapid and significant expansion of our Open Access (OA) journals portfolio by launching high quality, high profile, fully OA titles, and developing existing OA titles.

As a Publisher in our specialist OA team you will work both in partnership with learned societies, and on proprietary titles to drive the growth and sustainability of the journals programme. A focus of the role will be on expanding our portfolio in physical sciences, although the remit will be broad, including journals across any field or discipline, therefore knowledge on physical sciences is not essential.

The role will be varied, including but not limited to these responsibilities;

  • Oversee and manage a mix of new and established OA journals across a range of disciplines.
  • Conduct market research to ensure that all decisions are based on sound evidence of the needs of authors, reviewers, funders, and institutions.
  • Work with the Senior Publisher, Open Access, develop and present business plans for approval by Senior Management for new fully open access journals.
  • Build strong networks in relevant subject areas and appoint qualified, highly motivated Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards to drive success of the new journals.
  • Launch high profile and high quality titles successfully to deadline. Work with the wider team to continually improve the process for launching fully OA journals.
  • Liaise with colleagues across various business areas such as marketing, production and finance to ensure the smooth running of the journals and success of the portfolio.
  • Work alongside Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards to set and implement strategic development plans for journals to maximise growth.

Please note: The start date for this position is April 2020.

About you

You will be a strong advocate for Open Access and for OUP’s open research offering, both externally to the research and library communities, and internally.

You will have;

  • Editorial experience working in journals publishing with experience of managing and developing journals.
  • A creative approach to problem solving.
  • The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines to deliver project goals.
  • Good time management and organisation skills, enabling you to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders at various levels and excellent influencing and communication skills.

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect of working hours and the use of technology to support regular remote working, dependent on role. We also have an on-site gym with subsidised membership fees and a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 11%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.
