Publisher (Fixed Term Contract)

Global Academic publishes books, journals and digital resources for the research, professional and higher education markets. The OUP Journals Division publishes academic and research journals in partnership with the world's most prestigious learned societies.

We are seeking a motivated and talented Publisher to join our fast paced and innovative journal’s Editorial team.

The role requires you to devise and implement strategic development plans for a small list of Mathematics and Physical Science journals, and provide high level operational support for a wider portfolio of high profile Science journals.

You will be part of a busy, dynamic department within OUP, offering a wide variety of day to day activities in an exciting environment. The successful candidates will have proven Journals publishing experience, as Editor/Publishing Manager/Publisher or similar and will be able to manage the end-to-end process of journal’s editorial development; from creating strategic development plans to coordinating internal and external stakeholders.

You will have a direct relationship with key journals and societies and you will have the confidence, diplomacy, and flexibility to engage internal and external teams to maintain excellent standard of client satisfaction.

You will:

  •  Manage the list of journals to ensure journal and divisional targets are achieved, including maintaining good internal and external relationships and retaining third party and editor contracts.
  •  Work closely with the Executive Publisher and Editorial Director, managing the operational processes, and collating and interpreting data spanning across the whole portfolio to inform strategy
  • Manage the budgets and pricing for individual journals to ensure these are completed on schedule and fulfill agreed departmental targets.
  • Build and maintain strong internal and external relationships to retain contracts
  • Develop your list of journals to maximise long and short term profitability of the journal list
  • Commission appropriate new journals in agreed subject area(s) through an appropriate mix of contracts with third-party owners, launches and purchases
  •  Attend editorial and society meetings and conferences, and present reports on behalf of OUP
  • Coordinate and engage the internal teams to ensure a high level of service is provided to societies and editors
  • Support the publishing team in setting publishing strategy for the list to ensure contracts are maintained and profits are maximized

About You         

The successful candidate will be hard-working with a positive, can-do attitude, and a creative flair. You will enjoy coming up with new ideas to achieve strategic objectives for your list. The successful candidate will:

  • Have journals publishing experience, as Editor/Publishing Manager/Publisher or similar.
  • Be educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Have an understanding of the issues surrounding STM journals
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Have proven ability to build strong relationships both internally and with external stakeholders
  • Be well organized with excellent time-management skills and the ability to prioritize a busy workload
  • Possess a strong sense of initiative with the ability to make appropriate suggestions for improvements to strategic development plans and working practices
  • Possess the ability to embrace change, and remain positive under pressure
  • Enjoy working autonomously as well as with the support of an interactive team.
