Release Train Engineer

About Us

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.  This role will be part of the Global Technology Delivery Hub, which aims to enable efficient and effective delivery of technology change within OUP.  Core to this mission is transforming the delivery of change using Scaled Agile (SAFe®) with this role being critical to the success of the transformation.

About the role

As a Release Train Engineer for one or more of the strategic Agile Release Trains within OUP Global Technology, you will be responsible for the delivery of the ART Objectives, facilitating the ART ceremonies and events, guiding the teams and suppliers delivering the value to OUP.  You will support the implementation of new and better ways of working – delivering value to our customers by building innovative and exciting new products and services using Scaled Agile (SAFe®).

Specific responsibilities are as follows:

  • Delivery of the ART Objectives
  • Manage and optimise the flow of value through one or more Strategic  Agile Release Trains (ARTs) using the appropriate tools and methods
  • Implementation of all ART releases within agreed timescales, costs and expected quality
  • Management of Demand and capacity within your Agile Release Train
  • Ensure Agile Release Train alignment with overall OUP strategy and Global Technology strategic roadmaps
  • Establish the key ceremony calendars for the global teams
  • Prepare for and facilitate delivery of the major ART ceremonies including PI Planning
  • Track and remove impediments to delivery
  • Drive improvement through Inspect & Adapt workshops
  • Provide pro-active Agile coaching and leadership for all roles within Global Technology to support Agile project delivery

About you:

Candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of working with SAFe 4.5
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies including Scrum
  • Experience of delivering complex projects and / or programmes
  • Excellent communication skills that can connect with all levels of the organisation via face-to-face and group presentation
  • Proven experience of organising and facilitating large events with 150+ attendees
  • Experience of using common Agile tools including Atlassian JIRA and associated applications
  • Ability to manage a large and varied workload, to prioritise and multi-task
  • A sound knowledge of a common software delivery lifecycle with an understanding of technical approaches and architecture.
  • A qualification within Agile from a recognised Agile body (Scrum.org, Scrum Alliance, SAFe etc)
  • Prior experience of working in non-agile project delivery methods such as PRINCE 2 or PMP would be beneficial but not essential
