About the Role

Reporting to the General Counsel, IP and Legal Operations, this is a new role to provide professional legal services to a range of business groups across OUP globally, primarily in connection with intellectual property (IP) and commercial contract matters.  It offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the creation and implementation of strategies for the management of IP across the OUP group, and so help shape OUP’s future approach in this area.  More specifically, this role would:

  • Provide proactive first line legal support to various business groups across the OUP group as required by the General Counsel, IP and Legal Operations in connection with a range of copyright, trade mark and commercial contract matters, taking overall responsibility for an agreed set of activities within an area of expertise, escalating issues as appropriate
  • Lead and/or contribute to the development, maintenance and support of IP related strategies, including those relating to the management of copyright, contracts, and content protection and enforcement, and to the translation of such strategies into policy and practice
  • Assist with the management of OUP’s global and product trade mark and domain name portfolio, in relation to strategy and process, trade mark procedural and enforcement matters
  • Act as an IP SME on contentious and non-contentious IP matters, including the conclusion of bespoke agreements with third parties involving the acquisition, maintenance and exploitation of copyright and trade marks
  • Create and maintain template agreements relating to content acquisition and exploitation and other general commercial matters
  • Instruct external lawyers to ensure appropriate, timely and cost-effective legal advice to OUP; manage IP litigation and other enforcement activity with external legal support
  • Help create and deliver guidance and training for business groups across OUP on template use as well as on copyright and other IP rights
  • Provide professional legal support regarding cross-divisional and group/intra-group matters, and the IP and related aspects of corporate transactions and other projects, as required
  • Monitor and advise on legislative and industry developments relating to copyright and other IP rights to assist the business in responding to these developments.

We are currently thinking through how we use our offices in the future and are open to discussing flexibility within this such as a blend of office and home working. We expect this role to require a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

Please note: We may close the advert earlier if we find the right candidate so please apply at your earliest convenience to avoid disappointment.
