JOB VACANCY

Senior Production Editor, TSPM

We are the world’s largest university press. We have both a worldwide reach and a personal understanding of local needs, partnering on the ground to adapt publications and resources to meet the individual needs of communities, societies, and countries. We partner with researchers, educators, and technology partners to stay ahead of the changing ways people around the world are accessing and sharing knowledge. With a presence in more than 50 countries and millions of customers around the world, an idea launched at OUP can have global impact.

As part of Publishing and Content Operations we support the Academic Division that publishes books, journals, and digital resources for the research, professional, and higher education markets.

About the Role

This exciting role focusses on supporting a fast-paced and diverse Academic publishing program within the Content Operations Books Department. As the Senior Production Editor TSPM (Total Supplier Project Management) you will be solution-oriented and comfortable embracing change, while also being able to help foster said change and to be an evangelist for improving quality and efficiency.

You will oversee the work of supplier project managers, who act as the primary production contacts for titles ranging from relatively simple to highly complex. The role is also expected to ensure that all individual product components are delivered timely, accurately, and within budget.

Key accountabilities also include:

Supporting and mentoring supplier project managers (PMs) through all production processes:

  • Support PMs in creating and maintaining appropriate schedules and budgets for each individual project.
  • Support PMs in upholding general quality standards and evaluating performance discrepancies as well as collaborate on finding solutions.
  • Support PMs in commissioning, negotiating fees for, tracking, and evaluating quality of work for pre-press suppliers and for other service providers such as copy-editors, proofreaders, and indexers.
  • Analyse and resolve product- and process-related problems in conjunction with PMs.

Advocating for OUP, author, and supplier, and liaising with all internal and external stakeholders of a project:

  • Manage expectations of all parties if necessary and do so with skill and knowledge so that all projects are met with success; authors and editors feel supported and their requirements are being met; and PMs are getting what they need to effectively meet stated requirements.

Participating in projects which improve the quality and efficiency of the production processes:

  • Suggest, take part, or lead projects of various sizes that help support OUP’s strategic objectives of Grow, Simplify, and Adapt.

Supporting the Content Operations Manager:

  • Assist management with regular or ad-hoc delegated tasks such that the department workload is successfully managed, and stakeholders report a good experience of working with Content Operations.
  • Act on the manager’s behalf in their absence or on request.
  • Take the lead on new starter training.

We are thinking through how we use our offices in the future and are open to discussing flexibility within this such as a blend of office and home working.

About You

As the successful candidate, you will be able to demonstrate the following skills:

Required:

  • Relevant experience in book or journal production work or in project management
  • Experience working with offshore suppliers
  • Constructive and proven approach to problem-solving
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple and conflicting priorities and projects at once—prioritize judiciously and manage requirements for a high volume of titles
  • Ability to monitor schedules and manage different workflow
  • Ability to build relationships and work with various internal stakeholders, up to management level

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of print and digital production processes and project management in a content-centric publishing environment
  • Experience supporting an outsourced production workflow
  • Experience of training others
  • Experience with change management

Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind, we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect of working hours and the use of technology to support regular remote working, dependent on role. We also have an on-site gym with subsidised membership fees and a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 11%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.
