JOB VACANCY

Senior Designer, Primary

About the Role

We’re looking for a talented and motivated Senior Designer to join our Primary ELT Design team, working across a wide range of print and digital products for international education markets. You’ll create high‑quality, engaging design, develop impactful brand identities, and contribute to market‑leading covers, layouts, digital content, and marketing materials.

The role involves managing external design and typesetting suppliers, outsourcing visual content, and leading on illustration style and direction, while ensuring all work meets OUP’s standards for quality, accessibility, and D&I. You’ll collaborate closely with editorial, media, and marketing teams to ensure design solutions meet product and customer needs.

You’ll manage schedules and budgets across an allocated list of titles, maintain accurate project information, and support cost‑efficient workflows. The role also includes maintaining brand toolkits and asset‑management systems, and staying up to date with trends in design, illustration, photography, and publishing technology, while ensuring compliance with OUP policies.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

You’ll bring a qualification or relevant experience in Graphic Design, along with a proven track record of producing first‑class design for Primary or Secondary educational publishing. Strong typographic and layout skills, demonstrated through a high‑quality portfolio are essential, as is solid experience working as a print designer in a publishing environment.

You should have full knowledge of the design process and be fully proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and interactive design tools. Experience producing and outsourcing design, typesetting, and illustration for print and digital content is desirable, and digital design experience or familiarity with XML workflows would be an advantage.

Excellent communication, organisation, and time‑management skills are required, along with the ability to prepare files for both print and digital delivery. Knowledge of MS Office is also expected.

Please ensure that a copy of your portfolio is accessible to us on your application, either as an attachment, or linked in your CV.

Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

This role comes with the added benefit of a discretionary annual payment.
