JOB VACANCY

Senior Indirect Tax Manager

Oxford University Press (OUP) is a world‑leading university press with a unique mission: to create and share knowledge that improves lives across the globe. As our operations continue to evolve, we’re looking for a collaborative, commercially aware Senior Indirect Tax Manager to join us.

About the Role

This is a high‑impact global role where partnership is everything. You’ll work closely with senior leaders, finance teams, legal colleagues, and our Global Process Lead to ensure OUP meets its global VAT and indirect tax obligations while supporting our charitable objectives and protecting our reputation worldwide.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Act as the primary VAT and indirect tax partner to OUP’s global businesses.
  • Build strong, trusted relationships with stakeholders across the organisation, ensuring tax considerations are understood and embedded in decision‑making.
  • Provide clear, timely, and practical advice on VAT queries, contractual matters (in partnership with Group Legal), and business initiatives.
  • Support VAT due diligence and integration activities for any acquired businesses.
  • Engage with senior business leaders to understand new products, services, and routes to market — assessing and communicating the tax implications.
  • Monitor global legislative changes and work with external advisers where needed.
  • Lead on implementing new tax registrations and de‑registrations.
  • Partner closely with the Global Process Lead & OneSource Business Owner to shape VAT systems solutions and support the global rollout of OneSource as part of OUP’s ERP transformation.
  • Sign off UK VAT returns, including OUP’s VAT sector within the University’s return, distance selling registrations, and the IOSS return.
  • Oversee global VAT/indirect tax compliance, including reviewing returns and supporting local finance teams.
  • Manage global tax authority queries and audits.
  • Maintain oversight of supply chain VAT implications, including incoterms and product movements.
  • Ensure compliance for digital product routes to market, including registration and invoicing requirements.
  • Oversee the application of the education exemption and its impact on partial exemption.
  • Ensure all indirect tax filing deadlines are met globally through the Smart Tax Suite.
  • Support the Group Tax Director in monitoring global tax risks and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Work with local management to resolve issues and manage any significant tax authority interactions.
  • Contribute to tax strategy implementation and prepare inputs for Group Audit Committee reporting.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

Essential:

  • Experience of working in an Indirect Tax role in a global environment.
  • Tax or accountancy qualification.
  • Expertise in VAT rules including place of supply, exemptions, reverse charge, distance registrations and IOSS etc.
  • Knowledge of global VAT / indirect tax rules, preferably learnt in the context of a multinational group.
  • Knowledge of relevant Customs issues.
  • Experience of working in an ERP and Tax engine environment and good working knowledge of system functionality.
  • A collaborative and inclusive approach when gathering facts and information but decisive when necessary to reach timely conclusions and decisions.
  • Strong and effective communication written and verbal skills at all levels of the organization.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of operating in a process environment (e.g. PTP, OTC etc).
  • Understanding of internal controls for process area.
