Associate Managing Editor

About Oxford University Press

OUP have been a leading figure in publishing for more than 500 years. We’ve always been a forward-looking organization, maximizing the technology of the time, and the digital revolution is bringing enormous change, fast. That same spirit of adventure and entrepreneurialism is critical to our future success. In a fast-changing publishing landscape, OUP welcomes the inquisitive, the inventive, and the ambitious; people who challenge the conventional, and pioneer the possible.

About the Role

This is an exciting new position, supporting the Managing Editors of our Nucleic Acids Research (NAR) and Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) portfolios, to ensure that the journals are published in a smooth and timely manner and to a high standard, providing support to the Editors in Chief and Associate Editors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Oversee the editorial process for manuscripts submitted from pre-submission proposal assessment to publication. Monitor journal inboxes and submission systems ensuring a timely and appropriate response to all email queries and accurate record keeping in submission system.
  • Working with the JNCI and NAR Managing Editors, ensure that relevant changes and developments are made to the journal submission systems in a timely manner. Prepare journal and portfolio level reporting as and when required.
  • Liaise with the Virtual Editorial Office (VEO), copyediting and proofreading freelancers, and OUP Production staff and suppliers as necessary. Answer Editors’ questions, and provide guidance on policy, ethics, and editorial decisions. Assist Editorial leadership with building and maintaining the Editorial Board, ensuring adequate and diverse coverage on the Board to cover relevant expertise and submission volume.
  • Prepare regular Editorial status reports on submission volume, acceptance rate, turnaround times, and other KPI’s. Serve as a key point of contact for Managing Editor, Publisher, Society representatives, Editors, authors and reviewers.

We are thinking through how we use our offices in the future. For this role, we expect attendance in office to be limited to occasional client meetings.

About You

You’ll be a highly organized individual with excellent prioritization and time management skills, and comfortable with a high volume of administration.

You will have:

  • Prior editorial or publishing experience
  • Familiarity with online submission workflows
