Copyright Permissions Controller

This is an exciting opportunity to join the busy Product Management team – we work across five different content sectors to provide operational and administrative support for our editorial colleagues, enabling the efficient delivery of content to our customers.

About the role

Reporting to the Head of Product Management Operations you will be responsible for ensuring that permissions, for the use of 3rd party text-based content in all English Language Teaching division publications, are sourced and cleared efficiently and in accordance with copyright law.

Core duties include:

  • Research, manage and administer the clearance of permissions for text and song lyric content
  • Support people in Product Management as a key point of contact advising on rights issues
  • Training editorial teams in fair usage, best practice, fee negotiation and general copyright clearance management
  • Evaluate copyright agreements for existing publications in order to assess viability of potential licensing opportunities
  • Maintain copyright permissions records on an online file keeping system
  • Work with outsourced suppliers to deliver permissions clearance services
  • Advise on appropriate copyright sources
  • Manage costs and budgets for permissions
  • Problem solving and looking ways to continuously improve the permissions clearance system
  • Report on permissions clearance data on request
  • Manage diverse queries and questions on all aspects of copyright usage.

This is a full time role based in Oxford; however we would be open to those wishing to work 28 hours per week and are flexible in terms of when hours are worked. Once established in the role the post holder has the option of working from home one day per week.

About you

Candidates need to demonstrate they are/have:

  • Experience of permissions clearance for text and song lyric content or general copyright licensing
  • Knowledge of copyright law and licensing – experience of terminology and provisions used in intellectual property contracts.
  • Strong administration, organizational, negotiation and time management skills.
  • Able to work independently to meet challenging deadlines with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong communication skills, able to convey requests and respond effectively to colleagues, 3rd party copyright holders and outsourced suppliers.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to organise own work, use initiative and prioritise tasks.
  • A legal qualification (desirable).
