Managing Editor

About the Role

This is an amazing opportunity for a commercially minded Managing Editor wanting to work on prestigious, high impact journals during a dynamic time for our team. 

BJS (formerly the British Journal of Surgery) is one of the world’s leading surgical journals with a high-quality sibling Open Access journal, BJS Open. The Managing Editor role is to provide an excellent level of support to the editor teams of BJS and BJS Open and to ensure timely publication of the journals at a high standard.

Duties of the role will include:

  • Managing the editorial process for manuscripts submitted to the journals, from submission to publication
  • Assuming responsibility for the online submission system
  • Preparing journal and portfolio level reporting
  • Staying abreast of developments in the broad field of surgery, and in the journal’s competitive environment, to assist editors in identifying emerging areas of interest to the journal and potential new developments
  • Preparing and participating in journal editorial board meetings, BJS Society Council meetings, and additional meetings as required
  • Efficiently logging and investigating all ethical issues following COPE guidelines until resolution
  • Line management responsibility for the Associate Managing Editor
  • Managing and monitoring journal expenditure
  • Managing and monitoring the BJS social media feeds

This role can be based remotely from anywhere in the UK.

About You

  • Experience in running the editorial office of a high-profile medical journal
  • Experience with ScholarOne online submission system
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A doctoral degree in a relevant subject area would be beneficial
