Technical Consultant / Lead Developer

Integration Technical Consultant

We are looking for a lead developer in the Integration space at Oxford University Press. This is an exciting role in a growing and vibrant team. This job will involve working with the business to understand their requirements, and supporting the technical delivery of that work through a combination of design, consultancy and hands-on development. You would be part of the Integration Service & Delivery Center (SDC), working across OUP on a wide variety of projects. Our primary technology choice is currently based on Apache Camel, so understanding of this is essential (we will train the right person, provided there is existing knowledge of Java and Spring Integration), as well as Java, docker, and of course, integration best practices and design patterns. We work in an agile manner, and OUP operates using the SAFe (Scaled Agile) methodology.


To develop, implement and quality assure solution/systems designs which are aligned to IT architectures / standards and deliver required outcomes for projects and other change activities. Is able to develop low level designs, build solution software and to manage the lifecycle of the integration solutions.


  1. Design & build of integration solutions in Java & Camel for e-commerce and internal applications (e.g. SAP). Is familiar with integration design patterns and electronic data interchange formats.
  2. Manage and maintain overall design integrity of services / platforms. Define engineering standards and best practices for development teams to follow.
  3. Identify and assess technology solution options and associated costs, conduct gap analysis, and proof of concepts for new solutions, as appropriate. Produce preliminary design specifications, time and resource estimates and support business case production.
  4. Lead impact assessment of changes & options.
  5. Proactively maintain and exploit market knowledge of technology options and tools to identify and create business improvement opportunities. Develop insights (e.g. best practices, vendors, industry trends, innovation) to assist in the sourcing of solutions.
  6. Ensure that solutions are strategically aligned with Enterprise architecture. Assess the impact of the proposed solution architecture on other dependent enterprise solutions' architecture.
  7. Lead technical implementation and ensure design and build of solutions are carried out in accordance to standards. Review and signoff on outcome of detailed design phase.
  8. Manage the lifecycle of products and solutions in use in the Press, to ensure that they remain within support and maintenance. Analyse vendor roadmaps and end of life cycles and assess their impact on the Press and recommend actions.
  9. Identify and implement opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement for the Press to benefit from the strategic application of technology.
  10. Pro-actively demonstrate required behaviours in line with expectations of the role

Core development skills:
Apache Camel, Java, Eclipse, SQL, Spring, Service Oriented Architecture / Web Services - SOAP / REST, HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery, XML and JSON, MQ technologies e.g. ActiveMQ
Business and publishing technologies and processes:

  • Operating as a Technical solution design authority
  • Agile approaches and ways of working
  • Facilitation, influencing and negotiation skills
  • Strong external, market knowledge of target applications, environments, systems software, packages, platforms etc.
  • Ability to simplify and communicate complex concepts and information.

Optional: Awareness of BizTalk and enterprise service bus software, SAP, MongoDB
Business and publishing technologies and processes:

  • Agile and DevOps tools such as Jira, Slack, Puppet or Chef, Docker
  • Broad understanding of the Publishing industry Enterprise Architecture and technology landscape with in-depth knowledge in areas of specialism
  • Collaborative working in a complex geographical / functional matrix organization
  • Knowledge and understanding of world class Technology organisations with a strong external perspective of developments in Technology.
