UX Designer

About Oxford University Press

Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. The Academic division has well-established high-traffic websites covering books, journals and reference aimed at the research, professional and higher education markets.

About the Role

User Experience is a really important area for OUP, and this is a great opportunity to take your career to the next level. The UX Designer will contribute designs for our books and journals websites. You’ll set research objectives, create prototypes, interpret analytics and run design workshops to provide a robust UX analysis. Designs will be delivered with precise specification and documentation governing use within content management systems.

However this position offers the opportunity for full time remote working, with occasional travel (once / twice per month) to our HQ in Oxford.

Key duties of the role will include:

  • Provide UX design analysis, prototypes, user flows and information architecture for assigned ideas.
  • Facilitate UX design workshops in order to understand business and user needs.
  • Deliver design specifications, HTML / CSS and other required design assets to project teams.
  • Communicate designs to stakeholders, ensuring that design decisions are reasoned and understood.
  • Contribute to design systems documentation, design governance and component libraries to ensure ongoing design consistency.
  • Maintain knowledge of competitor UX and understanding of UX process and practices.

About You

The role requires a deep knowledge of web and accessibility standards, and the ability to understand the use of complex information products. You will be a passionate UX practitioner who can communicate your designs and reasoning to many stakeholders in a busy publishing environment. In addition to your technical and analytical skills, you will be a strong visual designer with a focus on web typography.

Strong experience of web and visual design is essential for this position, and you’ll have the opportunity to shine during the interview by talking us through your portfolio.  Continuous Improvements is also a key area for us, so experience of using Web / Usage Analytics to inform design decisions is highly advantageous.

You will have skills and experience in the following areas:

  • UX process and practice.
  • Design prototyping tools.
  • Adobe CC.
  • Accessibility standards and practice.
  • Worked on Information Products.
  • HTML / CSS (advantageous).
  • Publishing workflows (advantageous).
  • Formal design / UX qualification (advantageous).
  • Experience of Academic publishing (advantageous).

We really care about your work / life balance here at OUP. With this in mind, we’re offering a salary of £30,000 to £40,000 (DOE), 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect of working hours and support regular remote working for this position.
