JOB VACANCY

Assistant Editor

The Academic division publishes books, journals, and digital resources for the research, professional, and higher education markets.
This role is within the Higher Education department, where we commission, shape and develop content of the highest quality to support teaching and learning in the Higher Education sector.

About the Role

As Assistant Editor, you will drive continued growth of OUP’s business and management textbook publishing programme by managing a portfolio of titles so that they meet current and future market needs. You will work closely with authors and with sales, marketing, digital, design, and production colleagues to ensure that the resources we publish exceed market expectations, and deliver to specification, within budget, and on time.

 Primary responsibilities:

  • Commission and project-manage a portfolio of new editions, guiding authors to ensure the timely submission of final manuscripts that adhere to the agreed brief, schedule, and budget and meet market needs.
  • Help authors to shape their print and digital content by gathering, analyzing and interpreting market feedback, and by exploring and understanding the competitive landscape.
  • Manage your portfolio of titles in an organized, efficient way, with careful attention to detail at all times.
  • In collaboration with sales and marketing, drive adoptions using your product and market knowledge.
  • Maintain productive relations with colleagues in other departments and functions to ensure on-time publication and optimal sales of your books.
  • Be a great ambassador for OUP by maintaining excellent relationships with the academy in your discipline, including your reviewers, adopters and other advisers.
  • Use your interactions with the market to stay abreast of curricular and pedagogical changes and competitor activity so that we can make the right publishing decisions.
  • Play an active part in a team that identifies problems early and considers possible solutions; that takes a continuous improvement approach to all work; and seeks to innovate so that we introduce new ideas to our publishing that add value and enhance sales.

About You

To be successful in this role you will:

  • demonstrate excellent organizational skills
  • demonstrate exceptional communication and negotiation skills
  • have strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills
  • demonstrate sound editorial and commercial judgement
  • have demonstrable experience of gathering and analysing information to make sound, informed decisions
  • have meticulous attention to detail
  • work effectively on your own, but be naturally collaborative
  • be educated to degree level (or equivalent)
  • have recent higher education editorial experience, and/or a proven track record in higher education sales or marketing

Most importantly, you will be curious about the future and come up with creative, timely and cost-effective solutions that move our business forward.
