Development Team Lead

Oxford University Press has an immediate opening for a knowledgeable and dynamic individual to take on the position of Development Team Lead in the Higher Education Department.

Our Higher Education leading platforms are a key area of focus as we provide a new range of integrated digital products and services in a rapidly evolving market.

Working alongside dedicated and talented colleagues at the world’s largest university publisher, you will have the opportunity to use your experience and passion to deliver first-class solutions within our NodeJS-based platform architecture, as well as contributing to the continuous improvement of the team’s approach.

 

Key Opportunities

1. You will be able to develop yourself and the team by:

  • Providing day-to-day coaching and mentoring, helping the team to deliver their work according to Agile principles.
  • Providing technical leadership to ensure that innovative and fit for purpose solutions are selected.
  • Working with other Development Team Leads and Technical Consultants to help set OUP’s technical direction and incorporate a common technical approach into Higher Education platforms.
  • Developing a robust and maintainable test workflow working alongside the Testing Centre of Excellence.

 2. You will help us deliver high-quality and innovative solutions by:

  • Being involved in the full software development lifecycle, from inception to development to DevOps.
  • Understanding business requirements to assess operational feasibility and determine acceptance criteria.
  • Creating a great user experience by writing well-designed and efficient code.
  • Delivering high quality and robust solutions by performing functional and non-functional unit and component testing.
  • Writing and maintaining technical documentation.

 

3. Building on your existing skills you will be encouraged to further develop specialist knowledge in relevant programming languages, tools and techniques and to demonstrate how these can be applied to further drive innovation and improvement.

 

4. As a smart, humble and engaging person you will help your colleagues and Oxford University Press to grow by sharing your expertise and providing technical advice and guidance to others.

  

Essential skills and experience:

  • Experience in leading or coaching teams of developers.
  • First-rate skills in server-side and client-side Javascript (up to ES6) and a desire to stay technically hands-on.
  • Extensive experience of working with and building NodeJS applications and use of other Javascript frameworks, such as Angular, React, jQuery.
  • Experience writing JavaScript unit tests with libraries, such as Mocha, Chai.
  • An excellent understanding of HTML5, CSS3 and emerging Web Standards.
  • Experience of building responsive websites and applications using Bootstrap or similar frameworks.
  • Previous experience of working to the LTI specification.
  • Experience of creating and consuming web-services using REST, SOAP and JSON/XML data exchange formats.
  • In depth understanding of the HTTP protocol, including HTTP proxying in a NodeJS context.
  • Experience of distributed caching, particularly Redis, Memcache.
  • Experience of using MongoDB and Mongoose.
  • Experience with Bitbucket, GitHub or other similar source control solutions.
  • Knowledge of common design patterns and strong OOP/FP knowledge.
  • Previous experience working in an Agile environment, delivering through Scrum, Kanban etc.
  • Proven ability to identify functional and non-functional requirements.
  • A working knowledge of the Mac/Linux command line and bash/shell scripting.

 

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Prior experience of KeystoneJS (CMS platform)
  • Use of build/compilation tools, such as NPM and Grunt.
  • Extensive experience of Continuous integration tools, particularly Jenkins.
  • Previous exposure to Docker application containerization
  • Experience with architecting and hosting of applications within a cloud-based environment, preferably AWS.
  • Knowledge of AWS Elastic Beanstalk.
  • Exposure to working within a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
