Divisional Ethics and Compliance Officer (Oxford)

About the role:

This is a complex and senior role, based in Oxford, which will involve a significant amount of international travel. You’ll be reporting directly to the Group Ethics and Compliance Officer, with a dotted line to the Managing Director of our Academic division. The successful applicant will be a member of both the Academic senior leadership team and Compliance’s senior leadership team. You’ll manage four direct reports based in three different countries.

The Divisional Ethics and Compliance Officer (DECO) is responsible for ensuring that Academic has fully implemented the Group Corporate Compliance Programme across all parts of the division in a proportionate manner.

Key accountabilities:

  • In conjunction with other senior Academic managers, to communicate and demonstrate Academic’s commitment to OUP’s compliance programme so that an appropriate culture is maintained across the division.
  • To ensure an effective compliance training programme is in place for all Academic staff, with a particular focus on those in roles that are more likely to encounter bribery and fraud.
  • To ensure that Academic’s business partners are subject to appropriate risk assessment and due diligence.
  • To establish and communicate procedures within Academic to ensure that all high risk business activities are identified and treated in accordance with policy and procedure for such activities.
  • To provide training and support to encourage Academic staff to raise ethical concerns, ensuring these are reported promptly to the Investigations Department.
  • To ensure that investigations of allegations delegated to Academic’s ethics and compliance team are investigated in accordance with the Group Investigation Manual.
  • To provide guidance and support to Academic division on ethics and compliance matters.
  • Line management of 4 staff (based in 3 different countries).

About you:

To be considered for this role you need to:

  • Willingness to travel international travel.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • A depth of understanding of ethical compliance programmes and principles.
  • Strong ethical sense and understanding of the business.
  • The ability to communicate effectively.
  • A legal background would be beneficial.


We offer a fair salary, 25 day’s holiday (plus bank holidays), pension contributions to 11%, Private Medical Insurance and a 35 hour working week, along with the flexibility to start and finish late or early as required.

Salary: Dependent on skills and experience.
