Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford, which furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide.  This role will be part of the Global Technology Delivery Hub, which aims to enable efficient and effective delivery of technology change within OUP.  Core to this mission is transforming the delivery of change using Agile methods, including Scaled Agile (SAFe®).

About the role

The Release Management function within OUP Global Technology, leads the definition, scheduling, and execution for regular releases of technology in order to meet the demand from within the Global Technology organisation.

Specific responsibilities are as follows:

  1. Release definition, scheduling and execution of release activity from teams within OUP Global Technology
  2. Lead release readiness meetings, including interaction with teams and key decision makers
  3. Establish and operate release processes for one or more project, team, major programme, or Agile Release Train
  4. Contribute to the development, implementation and continuous improvement of one or more project, team, major programme, or Agile Release Train
  5. For a specified release cycle, application or platform:
  • Apply agreed principles to prioritise demand and schedule deliveries and regular and frequent releases for each application / platform.
  • Highlight bottlenecks and potential clashes; pro-actively propose and implement mitigating actions and plans.
  • Create and communicate a transparent view of Technology delivery and release
  • Where there are capacity constraints or other scheduling issues; follow agreed prioritisation and escalation routes in order to reach and communicate a timely decision and transparent rationale.
  • Provide analysis, insights and reporting for stakeholders and facilitate effective prioritisation and decision making.
  • Manage / oversee releases from inception, through scheduling through delivery and implementation.

About you

Candidates will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of release management activities within a software engineering function
  • Experience with establishing and operation of Technology release activity, including predictable scheduling
  • Supporting key roles holders such as Release Train Engineers, SMO, Infrastructure owners and business stakeholders to effectively, efficiently and safely deliver change
  • Dealing with competing stakeholder demands and intense pressure to satisfy all needs
  • Collaboration and clear communications with a variety of stakeholders from technical and non-technical audience
  • Brokering decisions and commitments in a clear and transparent way
  • Combining rigorous detailed analysis with big picture communications of options and decisions
  • Operating successfully in a complex geographical / functional matrix organization.
  • Prior experience of working in an Agile delivery manner, preferably within Scaled Agile SAFe®
